My little girl is five years old today! It’s true that time flies when you are having fun. One of the things I enjoy most about celebrating my girls birthdays is coming up with photoshoot themes to represent their celebration.

Last year, for her fourth birthday, Ji had a mermaid themed playdate at Grand Park. It wasn’t a big birthday party, we ordered subway and bought a $7 cake from the grocery store and it was the perfect day of fun with cousins and a couple of close friends.

However, a few days before, we took the one hour drive to Malibu. My husband, who is a semi-professional photographer, captured the milestone with a mermaid themed photoshoot.

Toddler Mermaid Birthday

This Malibu beach is very popular for photo shoots and it was filled with engagement, wedding, and maternity sessions. Ji was the only birthday shoot from what I could tell. She got lots of “oh my gosh, how cute!” compliments. She was in full mermaid attire and had so much fun playing like a mermaid for the day.

Quick Note:  This Malibu beach definitely makes for great sea and mermaid themed photoshoots. However, I don’t know that I would call it “a secret” as it’s filled with many people taking pictures. You’ll need to have some photoshop skills to edit all the other people out of your shots.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before heading out to El Matador State Beach in Malibu:

Address: 32350 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu

Parking: There’s a small lot with about 20 parking spots. It’s about $8 to park.

Bathrooms: Are at the top by the parking lot. There’s none at the beach

Other: A very steep walk down. Wear the right shoes! Expect to see many other photographers there!
