Water Fun at Santa Fe Dam

My best childhood memories were spent at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale. No one in the family had a big backyard so on special occasions like Fourth of July or Memorial Day weekend the whole family got together there.  The best part is that it’s only 20-30 minutes away from Los Angeles.  You can bike, fish, rent a boat and they even have a man made beach. That was always my favorite part.  My new favorite amenity is the kid’s splash pad.

We visited the splashpad last weekend and had a blast!! The best part about it is that it’s practically hidden in the back of the park so I’m letting you in on a cool Los Angeles little secret! We were one of four families there. The surrounding area is not as nice looking as the rest of the park. That area of the park must have suffered severely from  California drought because it looked liked it had been burned down. Either way, we had lots of family fun in this hidden gem!

So here’s the important info you’ll need to make a fun day out of it!

Parking is $10 per car. Arrive early because if the park reaches capacity they will close for a few hours. We arrived at 1 PM and barely made it in. My friend came around two and didn’t make it until 4 PM. The splash pad is located next to parking lot 5. They have an hour and half sessions. That was the perfect amount for us but you can stay for more sessions if you would like. They charge $2 per person (even little babies) and everyone must have a bathing suit on. Even if you don’t plan to get in the water.  I did like that they let us set up our canopy and blankets on the grassy area inside. Dahlia took a good nap while the hubby and I took turns playing with Ji in the water.

Once we had our fun in the water park we drove to another area that was close to a playground and set up a picnic. As soon as Ji has her swimming lessons we will definitely be spending time in the beach area this Summer. Especially because it’s the perfect halfway point to meet up with my Inland Empire friends.

Do you have a favorite Los Angeles Recreational Area?

I would love to check it out!

See you there,

Summer Memories at Barnes & Noble

Summer is here and I’m super excited to make new memories. If you’ve been reading my blog posts you know that I’m always on a look out for fun and free activities that I can do with the kids to create those memories. You also know that I immediately share my cool finds with you!

Today we headed out to Barnes & Noble. It’s one of my new favorite places to spend an afternoon at. Yes, a whole afternoon! They host awesome events and bring major authors, actors, musicians and other celebrities to stores across the country. The hubby and I like to grab a Starbucks coffee (they have them in store!), read to the babes in the kids play area, let Ji play and make new friends or just take it easy and walk around looking for cool new books to add to our collection.

Barnes & Noble Americana Balcony View

On my Summer reading list is Kevin Hart’s book I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons. I recently had the opportunity to interview him and was so inspired by his words that I just have to know more about his journey. He’s one of the authors who will be at Barnes & Noble, so if you want to meet him too, I suggest grabbing his book and going to one of his book signings. Trust me, you’ll want to meet him!

I really want my readers to take part in the fun, so I’m going to give away a $20 Gift Card to one lucky person, so that you can buy your favorite celebrity’s book and meet them! Click here to find events near you and let me know which one you want to attend by commenting on this blog post.

First theatre experience at Storybook Theatre in North Hollywood

We took both of the girls to their first theatre play this weekend.  Princess and The Frog at Theatre West was the perfect option. They do cute musicals with a life message that is perfect for kids ages 3-9 but my little Dahlia who is five months old couldn’t take her eyes off of the colorful stage!

baby's first play

Don’t worry if you think your kids won’t stay still! They don’t need to be super quiet because it’s a very interactive hour.  The actors are great with the kids and have them come up to the stage throughout the play.  Ji couldn’t get enough of her moments to shine. She raised her hand each time the opportunity was given!  She loves to play dress up so understandably she wanted to be an actress for the day.

Stoybook Theatre Box Office

There’s a short intermission and the kids are offered yummy treats like cookies and juice.  Once the play is over the fun continues! The kids have the opportunity to meet the cast, get autographs and take pictures with the characters. It’s such a great place to introduce your kids to the world of theatre!

Princess Autographing

Before we left the house we went over some simple theatre etiquette:

  • We need to be on time
  • We need to go to the potty before the performance starts.
  • No talking unless you are invited to by the cast
  • Applaud at the end!

Storybook Theatre is located inside Theatre West in North Hollywood. Location:  3333 Cahuenga Blvd. West 90068

They also host school groups and offer special packages for birthday parties!

See you there!

Get social with CityMoms App

I started the blog because I wanted to share all the fun events I was experiencing with Ji. Every month I would post a long list of events around Los Angeles that I thought would be fun for families to attend. I love sharing information with my readers but that list would take me hours to create and post, plus, not to mention hours on top of hours of research!

A few months ago, I was introduced to Citymoms app, and I loved it. Why didn’t I come up with this idea?! It’s a free app where you can find tons of activities for you and the kids to do. It’s really easy to use and it has a great filter feature so that you can find activities and events based on age and location. The location part is the my favorite because driving around Los Angeles can take hours, so the closer the better for me!

The Citymoms app also hosts free events around the city. I love that because I’m all about the FREE events! As a matter of fact, I will be hosting an event with them on April 13th at The Great Escape Club. Save the date and RSVP through the CityMoms app. You will be entered to win prizes!

Try CityMom app to get ahead of the game and plan your activities now, meet new friends and have some fun.

Take advantage and use my promo code lamamacita50 for 50% off your first month’s membership!

See you soon!

iLUMINOUS by Circus Vargas has arrived!

Last night my family and I had the opportunity to check out iLUMINOUS by Circus Vargas  and let me tell you! We had so much fun! iLUMINOUS is a new, high-energy extravaganza that illuminates the wonder and imagination of every child at heart. It was especially special to me because the very first circus show I attended  when I was a kid was by Circus Vargas, so it was nice to share the memory with my daughter and niece.

Our party consisted of my husband, myself, my two-year-old daughter, my three-year-old niece and my mom. Each of us had our favorite acts. I personally loved the luminous athletic bouncers on the trampoline wall because it made me feel like I was in Vegas for the night. I know that my mom loved the brother-sister roller skating daredevils because the act took you back in time through fun music.

The show is packed with lots of fun and laughs. A lot of laughs! It’s about  2 hours long with a  short intermission in between.

Here a few tips to make your trip to see iLUMINOUS a success:

  2. Bring Cash for Parking. We paid $10 at the Burbank Location
  3. Kids 2 and under to not need a ticket
  4. The free pre-show starts about 45 minutes before the show. Your kids will have the opportunity to join the circus!
  5. They have lots of snacks (nachos, popcorn, hotdogs, shaved iced and cotton candy) If that’s not your thing there are plenty of restaurants across the freeway. Just a 2-minute drive away.

A Sunday Morning at Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles

I spend a lot of time in Downtown Los Angeles. I have an office there; I worked in the jewelry district when I was younger, and I do most of my shopping at the fashion district. It’s also the place where I held my wedding reception.  We even named all the guests tables after Downtown Los Angeles street names. Let’s just say; it’s a big part of my life, and I love it. These days my favorite place to visit is Grand Park. I’ve been taking Ji there for the past year or so. They have many special events throughout the year, have a fun playground and a water fountain that doubles as a splash pad for the kids. It’s a perfect place for a fun day with the family. A couple of weeks ago we decided to spend our Sunday morning there.

Before heading to the park, we stopped at Ledlow for breakfast. We were quickly seated, and our food was delicious. I especially loved the pancakes that we ordered for Ji.

We then took a stroll down on Main Street to walk off our food and to show Ji where we held our wedding reception.

Six years ago we had our reception at the Old Farmers & Merchants bank. It is not typically a event space and mostly serves a backdrop  for film shoots and commercials.

Farmers Bank

After our walk, we drove a few blocks north to Grand Park. You won’t find street parking, but there is local lots on 1st and Temple that charge $10 for the entire day. You can also take the Metro and get dropped off right in the front steps of Grand Park! You can take  Red/Purple Line to the Civic Center/Grand Park stop.

Grand Park Reading

I grabbed a book from their Little Libraries nook and tried to read but it was too complicated for me! Either way, I relaxed while listening to the water fall in the background. Daddy and Ji were off running around. It was a bit chilly so the plan was to stay out of the water….

Music Center Courtyard

but over on the Music Center part of the park. It was too hard to resist….

Ji had so much fun chasing water but we had one more stop! The playground! We just had to walk over to the car first and put on some dry warm  clothes.

City Hall Garden

I was having too much fun playing and watching Ji that I didn’t take any pictures of this part of the day but the playground is so cute and modern. It looks like a tree house and the floor of the playground is super soft. You’ll find the playground between Broadway and Spring Streets (closer to 1st Street).
